Introducing Droid Resonator: A Browser-Based Polyphonic Synthesizer

synthlab

What started as a simple update to my earlier synth, Abducted Drone, quickly spiraled into a full-blown project. And I'm excited to finally share the result with you: Droid Resonator.

Droid Resonator is a browser-based synthesizer built entirely with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and the powerful Tone.js library. It brings a much more hands-on and musical experience than its predecessor, offering deep sonic control, a clean interface, and a range of features designed with both ambient explorations and melodic ideas in mind.

Droid Resonator

Key Features

  • 3 VCOs (Voltage Controlled Oscillators)
Each oscillator can be independently shaped using waveform, octave, and wave selectors. The mix levels allow for creative layering and rich textures.
  • 6-Voice Polyphony
Unlike Abducted Drone, which focused on monophonic textures, Droid Resonator lets you play full chords and pads with up to 6 simultaneous voices.
  • Dual Envelopes
Shape your sound with an AMP envelope (volume) and a Filter envelope, letting you sculpt both dynamics and harmonic movement.
  • Lowpass Filter
A classic cutoff and resonance control gives you everything from dark drones to resonant sweeps.
  • LFO Modulation
The built-in LFO can modulate the filter cutoff for subtle animation or wild movement.
  • MIDI Keyboard Integration
Plug in your MIDI controller and play: Droid Resonator supports external keyboards and even chords. I wanted to be able to play it with my Roland J-6!
  • Note Latch Mode
Engage the latch to hold notes without keeping a key pressed: perfect for drones!
  • Oscilloscope
A real-time oscilloscope shows your waveform in motion. It's both practical and a visual treat for synth nerds.
  • Clean interface
A clean, single-view interface that fits neatly on desktop and laptop screens, with a fullscreen option for full immersion. Controls are kept minimal and intuitive, making sound design clear, focused, and distraction-free.
  • Custom preset saving
Easily save and recall your own sound designs with the built-in custom preset system.
  • Basic Drum sequencer
A basic drum sequencer based loosely on 909 sounds is added. Sequence and play a simple beat while playing the synth! All sounds have basic controls: tone, decay, tuning and volume. It also features a distortion effect and swing control.

Note that this is a project in ongoing progress, so new features will be added overtime.

From Abducted Drone to Droid Resonator

I originally set out to add a few features to Abducted Drone, like better MIDI support. But once I got into the process, it became clear this needed to be its own instrument. While Abducted Drone will remain a minimal, meditative tool, Droid Resonator is built for deeper sound design and more musical interaction.

Try It Out

If you're into ambient music, experimental soundscapes, or just enjoy tweaking synths in your browser, I’d love for you to give Droid Resonator a spin. It runs entirely in your browser, so no downloads, no installation.
