These days it feels like every headline about music mentions artificial intelligence. But not every piece of "machine-driven" sound is AI. If you've ever heard of generative music, it might sound like the same thing, but it isn't.
Here's a straightforward guide to tell them apart, and an explanation why it is important for me to clear this out.

Generative Music: Setting a System in Motion

Picture a set of wind chimes.
You decide how many chimes there are, how they’re tuned, and where they hang. Then you step back and let the breeze create endless patterns. That’s generative music in a nutshell: a composer designs rules, sounds, and interactions, then a system plays itself.

Key traits:

  • Human-designed framework: The artist builds the 'machine': scales, rhythms, and parameters.
  • Real-time evolution: The music unfolds differently every time. No two performances are identical.
  • Chance & interaction: Randomness or live input (like a listener walking through a sound installation) shapes the result.

Think of it as gardening rather than songwriting: you plant seeds, set the conditions, and watch it grow.

AI Music: A Robot Composer

Artificial intelligence works differently. Instead of setting up a system to explore, you ask an algorithm to compose. You describe the style: "dreamy piano", "90s dance track", and the AI draws on enormous amounts of data to create something new that fits those patterns.

Key traits:

  • Data-driven learning: AI studies millions of songs to understand chords, melodies, and structures.
  • Direct generation: It outputs a finished composition or performance.
  • Imitation of style: The AI can mimic genres, artists, or even specific moods based on what it’s been trained on.

Why This Difference Matters to Me

As someone who creates generative music, I care about this distinction because generative music isn’t push-button easy.

Designing a piece means:

  • Crafting each instrumental layer and tone from scratch
  • Building the system that lets those layers interact in unpredictable ways
  • Tweaking and testing until the evolving sound feels alive and balanced

It takes hours, often days, to sculpt the textures and program the rules so the music can breathe on its own.
When people assume that generative music is "just AI", they miss the human artistry and hands-on sound design that make it special.

A Personal Note

I’m sharing this because I’ve had listeners comment on my tracks with phrases like "AI slop". While I know that AI can sometimes create ambient pieces that sound close to what I make (and generally also in terms of the ambient music genre), it's painful to see my work mistaken for something generated at the press of a button. Every track I release is meticulously built from scratch: sound design, layering, and the systems that guide the music’s evolution are all my own creation.

Equally important, the constant learning (discovering new synthesis techniques, refining sound design skills, and experimenting with evolving structures) is both fun and essential to my growth as an artist. That ongoing process is a big part of why I do this.

That’s why I want people, especially those who aren’t into synths or the ambient scene, to understand the difference between a generative piece and an AI-constructed one. It’s not just semantics; it’s about recognizing the time, craft, and personal expression behind the music.

The Takeaway

Generative music is a process you set in motion. AI music is a product an algorithm composes.
When someone says, "This was made by AI", or "This is generative", you’ll know there’s a world of difference behind those words.

My latest generative piece

My latest generative piece is a good example of what this process really involves. I built it in Bitwig Studio using Dune 3, Moog Mariana, and a virtual OB-Xa clone. Every sound was designed completely from scratch, then shaped by a huge web of modulation. Stepic driving complex sequences while Bitwig’s own modulators twisted a shitload of parameters until the textures felt alive. Getting there isn't instant: it takes serious time to learn each instrument's quirks and possibilities, and even longer to coax them into a piece that stays engaging as it unfolds. That deep, hands-on programming (and the fulfillment of hearing it come to life) far outweighs the one-click convenience of an AI-generated track.

And hey, I promise I’m not trying to be a cry baby about it.

I know the internet will internet, and a few "AI slop" comments aren’t the end of the galaxy.
I just figure if I spend hours mangling oscillators until they squeal in just the right cosmic key, the least I can do is squeak a little myself when someone calls it push-button music.
